Training and Development policy

This policy is included in the Employee Handbook.

A training and development policy should help an organisation meet it's goals and objectives by ensuring their staff have any required skills, receive training and develop in their role.

It is also important for a training and development policy to help ensure essential safety standards are met and that all employees attain any company required standards and qualifications.

Sections within policy include:

Training and development:

  • Evaluation of training needs and request.
  • Company support, assistance and authorisation.
  • Employee responsibilites, acceptance and agreement.
  • Standards, tuition, examinations, qualifications and general training.
  • Fees, books and training costs.
  • Resignation and employment termination.

Reclaiming training costs:

If you pay for staff to attend training, particular professional qualifications, you may want to reclaim monies and costs you have laid out (e.g. training course fees, professional studies and associated costs). Without an employee's prior written agreement (before you shell our even one penny) you cannot reclaim or deduct costs via the payroll.

This policy includes a reclaim clause and clearly explains to employees about fees, authorisation and when you will reclaim costs (e.g. should they leave your employment).

Study leave and professional qualifications:

If you employ trainees, ask staff to take professional qualifications or provide time-off work to study (paid or unpaid) you need to clearly explain to employees when you will and will not provide time-off work to, take an exam, obtain a professional qualification or undertake vocational training.

If you do not clarify details relating to professional qualifications and study leave, together with ensuring employee understanding and agreement, you cannot legally reclaim costs or terminate employment should an employee fail their exams or not complete a course.

This policy explains to employees what, if any, professional qualifications are required, the consequences of not satisfactorily obtaining any necessary qualifications, how continued study affects their employment and circumstances resulting in termination of employment.
