Redundancy policy

This policy is included in the Employee Handbook.

This redundancy policy is written to help organisations work through the redundancy process and includes procedures to follow when considering, implementing and undertaking redundancy terminations.

This policy also helps employers understand their legal obligations and outlines what legal rights employees have during a redundancy situation (for example, the right to be accompanied).

This policy covers:

Rights and responsibilities:

  • Company legal responsibilities and obligations.
  • Employee statutory rights, responsibilities and staff representatives.
  • Alternatives to redundancy, lay-offs and short-time working.
  • Different types of contracts and employment status.
  • Statutory redundancy pay and discretionary payments.
  • Employee appeals against a redundancy decision.

Redundancy consultation and selection:

  • Consulting and communicating with staff.
  • Fair redundancy selection critieria.
  • Making and communicating redundancy decisions.
  • Alternative roles (evaluating, offering, accepting, redeployment and trial periods).

Employment termination:

  • Redundancy notification and employment termination.
  • Time-off to look for alternative work or to re-train.
  • Employment notice periods.
