Compassionate, Family, Domestic & Emergency Leave policy

This policy is included in the Employee Handbook.

Employee's often assume they are contractually entitled to different types of leave, or if they do receive such leave they are entitled to more days than they actually are.

It is therefore important for an employer to explain different types of leave, the basis of any decisions made, including defining the boundaries (such as time limits) and informing employee's how their pay will be affected.

This policy defines the company's policy in relation to various types of leave and absence from work, and procedures that all parties concerned need to follow.

Types of absence covered in this policy include:

  • Compassionate leave
  • Parental leave entitlement and pay
  • Family emergency leave
  • Time-off for dependents
  • Domestic emergency leave
  • Treatment leave
  • Garden leave

Recent changes to the Work and Families Act have also created some confusion in employee's understanding of their leave entitlement and pay. The rules are complex - this policy explains to employees (and their employers) who is entitled to parental leave, how much leave they can take, when they can take it, and how their pay will be affected.
