Maternity policy

This policy is included in the Employee Handbook.

Pregnant employee's have the right to maternity leave and pay, regardless of marital status or length of service and must not be discriminated against just because they are having a child.

It is therefore extremely important for an employer to explain to pregnant employees what they are entitled to, what paperwork is required, when maternity leave can start and when they need to return to work (in order to exercise a right to return to work).

This policy defines the company's policy in relation to maternity leave and pay, and procedures that all parties concerned need to follow.

Some of the topics covered in this policy:

  • Pregnancy notification and confirmation (MATB1).
  • Ante-natal appointments and expected week of childbirth (EWC).
  • Statutory maternity pay (SMP).
  • Ordinary, additional and compulsory maternity leave periods (OML, AML).
  • Commencing and changing maternity leave start date.
  • Keeping in touch with employees (KIT days).
  • Returning to work (rights and early return).
  • Sickness, stillbirths and miscarriages.
