Adoption policy

This policy is included in the Employee Handbook.

Employees who adopt a child have the right to adoption leave and pay, regardless of marital status, sex or length of service. However they need to meet certain criteria in order to receive adoption pay and take leave.

It is therefore extremely important for an employer to explain to all employees what procedures need to be followed in an adoption situation, when an adoptive parent can commence adoption leave, how much leave they they can take, when they need to return to work (to exercise a right to return) and what pay they will receive during leave.

This policy defines the company's policy in relation to adoption leave and pay, and procedures that all parties concerned need to follow.

Some of the topics covered in this policy:

  • Adoptive placements, eligibility and entitlements.
  • Statutory adoption pay (SAP).
  • Ordinary and additional adoption leave periods (OAL, AAL).
  • Commencing and changing adoption leave.
  • Keeping in touch with employees (KIT days).
  • Returning to work (rights, early and non return).
  • Contractual benefits and employment rights.
  • Situations when adoption pay and leave might end.
